Sustainable development

Cloetta Fazer’s goal to provide high quality and flavourful products must always be balanced by consideration to employee well-being and environmental responsibility. The company’s long tradition and experience are reflected in the core values; open, expert, dynamic and Nordic.

Part of this tradition means being responsive to the needs of society and the market, as well as developing and driving change in harmony with consumers, customers, suppliers and the world around us.

Cloetta Fazer’s Code of Conduct, formulated in 2004, provides a framework for the company’s interaction with society and various stakeholders. It rests on an ongoing process in which operations are conducted based on a set of values that is continuously adapted to changes in local, national and international laws, market trends, social and cultural values.

Delivery reliability, consumer knowledge and high quality are key success factors for Cloetta Fazer. Today the products are sold primarily in the Nordic and Baltic regions and are manufactured in the company’s own factories, close to the consumers in the home markets.

RAW MATERIALS

In its Code of Conduct, Cloetta Fazer has gathered all of the general principles that govern the Group’s social and ethical commitments, also with regard to raw materials. We participate in international initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable extraction and distribution of raw materials. We also require our raw material suppliers to comply with our principles in these issues, and expect them to demand the
same from their own suppliers.

cocoa

Every year, Cloetta Fazer buys approximately 10,000 tonnes of cocoa in the form of cocoa mass, butter and powder that are manufactured in Europe. The cocoa comes primarily from West Africa and Ecuador in South America. Local intermediaries then distribute the raw materials to international cocoa importers/exporters.

The West African cocoa farmers face daunting challenges such as poverty, a lack of education and weak economic development. Quite clearly, no government, company or organisation can single-handedly solve these enormous problems. For that reason, Cloetta Fazer collaborates with other major players in the chocolate industry to promote better conditions at the cocoa plantations and communities. The goal is to achieve environmentally, socially and economically sustainable development in cocoa growing. Cloetta Fazer requires all of its raw material providers to follow the same principles in working for sustainable cocoa growing with their own suppliers. For Cloetta Fazer, it is important to play an active role in driving these issues.

World Cocoa Foundation

Since 2005, Cloetta Fazer is a member of the World Cocoa Foundation, which supports cocoa farmers and their families through a variety of programmes aimed at increasing the farmers’ yields and incomes and promoting sustainable cultivation. In the summer of 2007, two representatives from Cloetta Fazer’s purchasing department visited Ghana together with some 30 other chocolate producers to get a first-hand look at life on a cocoa farm. The goal of the trip, which was arranged by the WCF, was to learn more about how cocoa is cultivated, the conditions on a cocoa plantation and the logistics of cocoa farming. Another objective was naturally to see the results of the WCF’s work and how it can be further developed.

Echoes Alliance

Since the beginning of 2007, Cloetta Fazer is a fundingprovider to the ECHOES Alliance (Empowering Cocoa Household with Opportunities and Education Solutions), whose goal is to provide children in cocoa farming communities of the Ivory Coast with knowledge and skills in many vital areas related to cocoa growing through agricultural training and education in school. The funding is coordinated by the World Cocoa Foundation and USAID.

Caobisco

The company also works for sustainable cocoa growing through its membership in Caobisco (Association of chocolate, biscuit and confectionery industries of the European Union).

PALM OIL

In some of its products, Cloetta Fazer uses CBE (Cocoa Butter Equivalent), a mixture of vegetable fats that contains palm oil, as an alternative to cocoa butter. With regard to filling fats, Cloetta Fazer has chosen to use palm oil in certain products for reasons of consistency, shelf life and nutritional value.

Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil

Since 2004 Cloetta Fazer is a member of the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Cloetta Fazer buys fat mixtures containing palm oil from its principal supplier, which is one of the founders of RSPO and a member of its board. The palm oil used by Cloetta Fazer comes from West Malaysia. Palm oil certified according to RSPO criteria, which is the only generally accepted definition of sustainable palm oil production, is not yet available on the market.

ENVIRONMENT

Cloetta Fazer is continuing its efforts to reduce environmental impact through systematic environmental and quality management. The Group complies with all official environmental requirements and is not party to any environmental disputes. As the leader in the Nordic confectionery market, Cloetta must preserve and nurture the strong confidence placed in the company by consumers.

The Carbon Disclosure Project is an initiative by a coalition of organisations, public agencies and global asset managers to gather information about the business sector’s climate impacts and greenhouse gas emissions. In 2007 this in-depth study was carried out in the Nordic countries for the first time. In the Carbon Disclosure Project Nordic Report 2007, Cloetta Fazer came in fifth in a ranking of companies
with low carbon dioxide emissions.

SOS-children´s village in ValmIEra, Latvia

For every bag of Dumle Original sold until the beginning of 2009, part of the proceeds will go to construction and running expenses for the house at SOS Children’s Village
Valmiera. There are many children around the world in need of help. According to UNICEF’s latest report, half of all children on earth live in poverty and 121 million children of school-going age are not getting an education. The idea behind SOS Children’s Villages is based on a long-term commitment. In the villages, the children are given a home, a family and an education in an environment where they can grow into independent young adults. Helping to build the SOS Children’s Village Valmiera was a natural step for Cloetta Fazer, not least in view of the company’s involvement in Baltic region. Read more at Dumle´s webpage.
